finds, it was the worst way out. in a statement, rta chairman john gates says: "the rtas audit staff has determined that the metra boards deliberative process was flawed and their decision to give mr. clifford a generous severance package was not financially prudent. all costs related to the clifford contract dispute should have been claimed under metras existing insurance policy instead of being paid from tax- payer funds." the auditor's report says that insurance policy is capped at $10 million and specifically covers whiste-blower lawsuits. critics have been claiming for weeks that metra paid alex clifford one of the biggest settlements in illinois history to shut him up. the rta report does nothing to shut that theory down. auditors looked at thousands of pages of documents and listened to hours of testimony to come up with this. the final report is still being compiled. the draft report is being posted now on our website, wgntv.com live in the newsroom, tom negovan... wgn news.

>> for the first time publicly, mayor emanuel talked about his now-indicted former city comptroller. but it's not the first time he was asked about his hand-picked man who since resigned. weeks ago, wgn-tv inquired about his questionable past. you'll see what happened next. >> i want you to know this is the first amendment hard at work. >> mayor emanuel is not happy with questions about his indicted ex-comptroller during what was supposed to be a happy ribbon cutting at a renovated prep school. >> its not like the justice department gives you a heads- up. >> the mayor expressed his frustration with his former comptroller for not being forthright with him. >> he had a responsibility to inform the mayors office of what happened and what were the questions. that is where he

violated the trust. >> but the question remains... did the mayors office miss some red flags? its 2010 and theres a nasty campaign for the treasurers office in ohio. ahmads boss is getting hammered because of ahmads questionable ties to a lobbyiest. its those ties that are now the basis of the federal indictment against emanuals hand-picked choice to be the comptroller. now we take you to july 3rd, a month and a half before the comptroller's corruption charge. thats when wgn-tv asked to speak to the mayor about amer ahmads role in ohio. our reporter julian crews said the mayor's office abruptly canceled his previously scheduled interview. >> when they found out that we wanted to ask the mayor what the interview was about ... it was something that was already arranged. we had a one- on-one interview with the mayor.

the mayor's press aide said that two per going to ask other questions that were off topic and we said yes we were. the interview was dead at that point. they said in an interview. >> soon after that request, ahmad resigned. the mayor's office told us today, the wgn interview was canceled because questions about ahmad was not a previously agreed upon topic. the mayor's office insists they were satisfied with the vetting process of ahmad prior to his hiring. >> were going to do our own work to make sure nothing happened in chicago to violate the taxpayers trust. >> words to remember, considering ahmad was in charge of the city's purse strings and sat on the city's all important pension boards, which makes decisions on billions of dollars in city employee investments. >> in early july, we first tried to talk to the mayor about ahmad after a police officer blogged about the comptroller's troubles in ohio. when canceling our interview, the mayor's office said it doesn't respond to right wing bloggers. but the mayor's office has yet to produce records about the ahmad hiring that we requested in via

still fighting to be exonerated. a step forward today for johnnie lee savory. a peoria county judge has ruled dna in his case should be tested. savory served 30 years behind bars for a double murder but has always maintained his innocence. >> i can't get no justice. justice is gone. justice is a preventative measure to stop injustice from taking place. i can't get that. but i can get the truth. >> witnesses in the case have all recanted their stories. savory hopes dna found in the physical evidence will prove him innocent once and for all. >> 40 negligence lawsuits are now filed against northwestern memorial hospital and the northwestern medical faculty foundation which owned and maintained a sperm bank that malfuncitoned last year. sperm samples were destroyed that were kept in a cryogenic tank. the plaintiffs suffered serious illness or were undergoing medical treatment would likely render them infertile in the future. freezing their sperm was the only real hope they had for having biological children. the

the crime had run out. the newly elected mayor, tyrone ward, is promising justice for survivors who fell victim to incompetence. the new police chief also says the problems will be fixed. >> we will leave no stone unturned and we will make sure these cases are followed through. as far as the history, i can only... my heart goes out to the victims. i apologize on behalf of this police department, as well as the village of robbins. >> chief davis has already replaced the entire command staff. >> northwest indiana police want help tracking down a robbery suspect. the robbery took place around 3 a.m. on august 6th at a 7-eleven store on calumet avenue, in hammond. they're looking for the man you see here, described as six feet tall and weighing approximately 270 pounds. surveillance video shows the suspect carrying a black handgun, wearing a gray cut-off t-shirt, and white baseball cap. >> shots fired at a georgia elementary school.. but tragety avoided. it happened earlier

today at mcnair discovery learning academy in decatur, which is just about 15 minutes northeast of atlanta. police report the 19-year-old shooter fired six shots and aimed at officers as they approached the school. he is currently in custody and nobody was hurt. >> it came out for the best. thank god no one was hurt. no one. not even the suspect, he wasn't hurt. >> it is unclear whether the accused shooter had any connection with the school. >> the white house makes a significant move that could signal a shift in its relations with egypt. it has decided to temporarily withhold *some of the $1.5 billion in aid to egypt. the move follows the ouster of the democratically elected leader, mohammed morsi. officials say they'll continue to monitor the situation as events continue to unfold. >> this is not like a faucet. you cannot twist the dial on and

>> in tonights medical watch, record cases of lyme disease are being reported in lake county, illinois. there are 20 cases so far this year. the previous record high was 19 two years ago. deer ticks spread lyme disease. removing the tick within 36 hours reduces the risk of getting lyme disease. there are different opinions on how they should be removed and you should check with your doctor. once removed, save the tick for identification, in case you do become ill, by putting it in a bag in your freezer. new research suggests a lifetime of too much copper in our diets may trigger alzheimer's. the latest study showed high levels of copper left the brain struggling to get rid of a protein thought to cause the dementia. copper is an essential part of our diet and is found in everything from drinking water to red meat. don't stay away from it yet. the mineral is important for the body's nervous system development, bone growth, and hormone secretion.

despite the risks of cancer, many teenage girls are still using tanning beds. nearly 30% of white high school girls in the united states use tanning beds, according to a new study. since 1992, rates of melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, have risen 3% a year in white women ages 15 to 39. the dangers of tanning beds have led to increased restrictions in recent years. illinois is one of six states that have passed bans on underage tanning. >> we should get pretty close to 90 degrees tomorrow. but will the continued heat bring some much needed rain? tom skilling ♪

over lake michigan. we have this picture from mount st. helens. remember when this one erupted? this is what it looked like. during his trip, as he was running a marathon, was up in the 13,000 ft. level and sent us this shot of a thunderstorm forming in colorado. and finally, this picture ... look at that thunderstorm yesterday on the coast. one of many that has been hit in the southeast. this is an analysis of the smoke from the wild fires out in the western united states. the white area where the smoke is is being tracked by the satellites. they show us how the smoke is spreading out. some of this case is the result of high altitude wildfire smoke. what a beautiful

next couple days, it would sit in this tropical air mass which had a '90s up in minnesota. while temperatures up here are hot, it was sixties in alaska and it's no today. they have lost about five hours of daylight because of the moving of sunset and the sun goes past at this time of year. the cooler air is already gaining strength. it has pushed the cool air down warm air down into our area. we have an air pollution actions day. here is the 90 degrees at o'hare airport. we'd go into the 80s again on thursday but during the latter part of the day, the wind turns northeast and here is the big picture showing tomorrow's 90 degrees. it is part of this thing of warm air coming off 90 degree

temperatures and nebraska and the dakotas. here is the cooler air that will settle in and take the '80s on thursday and push it out of here with a strong northeast wind flow. then the one to will rebuild and watch back in over the weekend. that may be hotter than what we are going to see tomorrow. tomorrow will be dominated by southwest winds are around this high- pressure, and here is the front that settles south tomorrow night. i am going to show you the rain that are going to blow up by thursday morning. even by midday thursday, there could be some showers and storms. then a wind will begin to blow and will push the showers south of here. but we could use the rain. we are going to talk more about the returning heat and 90 degree warmth later in the weekend and much of next week later in the broadcast. tonight, warm with moderate humidity which is keeping this from being take

pathologist in highland park, and she understands what these kids are going through. >> they have to translate it and it gets lost in translation for them. it's very confusing and very frustrating. and then what are we going to put on top? >> a house. >> a house, put the house on top. >> it's estimated that one in ten children have some kind of processing issue. specialists like julie kahn can assess the problem and teach new skills, not just for the children, but for the adults. >> the source of the behavior is because of worry or fear. doing a time-out is not addressing the behavior, or what's behind the behavior. and i love catching a child when they're doing something right. i find that to be so much more effective than correcting afterwards. >> the conventional wisdom of rewards and punishments may work for some kids, but kids with processing issues often need a different technique. by dr. ross greene of the harvard medical school. he says regardless of whether there is a diagnosis, managing explosives tempers requires the same approach, and that involved assessing what is leading to your child's frustration. brushing teeth, getting dressed, transitioning from one activity to another... too often parents take the "i'm the boss" approach. greene says the problem is most of these children have a flexibility problem and it doesn't help when parents can't be flexible. >> when we assume we know what a kid is really up to and when we assume we really know what's getting is a kids way, we often go astray and bring the kid along with us right over the cliff. >> in the heat of the moment is no time to try and resolve a meltdown. >> in many ways, the kid is saying to us i'm not exactly who you thought i was. i can't do what you thought i could do. this is still a wonderful kid, but sometimes the parents have to let go a little bit of what we had envisioned and we have

the next 44 years we'll be fine. >> you're watching chicago's very own wgn news at nine. >> uncovering the secret lives of turtles in cook county. every year, forest preserve wildlife biologists trudge through wetlands to find all kinds of turtles, and perform quick and safe tests on them. wgn crews recently followed the biologists through busse woods in elk grove village as they checked six traps that were baited with fish. they found snappers and a painted turtle. they examined the turtles for bacteria, and possible pathogens... disease carriers. >> it is all interconnected and related. not just the animals and purples, but the the agitation and habitat. it all needs to be closely monitored. >> the biologists say since turtles live so long, they can learn a lot about the environment and help discover new diseases that can pass on to humans.

>> let's take a look at the otherweather. >> we have a jump in temperatures tomorrow and then a cool down and possibly some much-needed rain. a big warm-up comes on the weekend into next week. here are the current temperatures and it is one across the country. the cool air has returned to the north where it should be so that pattern is back to normal. 90 degrees in denver and 89 degrees in chicago. a lot of hype degrees out there. it is still 82 degrees at midway airport, cooler as you get away from the urban heat island. the wind is letting up as well. they have been blowing briskly from the southwest and will pick up tomorrow. the dew point could be going up towards 70 tomorrow.

that will fuel a few thunderstorms tomorrow night. bad news on the hay fever front. but mold and we'd count is high. ed count is high. the rain keeps pouring into the southeast. there is a disproportionate amount of rain falling. pensacola has had over 40 in. of rain. these are some of the rains that fell overnight up here, not a lot. there is a sign that the ring of fire pattern may start to get going after this week of heat and this could bode well in the moister department. we could get rain that we might see as forms of thunderstorms. before that are live, much of the day tomorrow will be a hot summer day of around 90 degrees. moderate to high humidity and thunderstorms isolated in the afternoon. they

they've struggled at kaufmann stadium in recent years, and the royals swept the sox in chicago last month. but the sox took a three-game winning streak into this game and it took no time at all to jump out. second batter of the game, gordon beckham, with the deep drive to left. his 4th homerun of the year. and just like that, the sox were up 1-0. john danks did most of the heavy lifting. here's one of his two strikeouts, but eight scoreless innings for danks. he got his first win since july 2nd. addison reed a scoreless ninth. sox win 2-0. >> to those who applauded boston's ryan dempster hitting alex rodriguez with a pitch sunday nigh, they would see it as "no good deed goes unpunished." dempster was suspended five games and fined by major league baseball. dempster will *not appeal and has begun serving his suspension, even as a-rod conitnues to play while appealing *his 211-game p.e.d suspension. >> one night after that 11-run outburst, runs were hard to come by under a full moon at wrigley
